Vocational education holds a strong and increasingly strategic position in the Finnish education system. In 2025, 324,000 students were studying in vocational education and training (VET) institutions, compared with 360,000 students in higher education institutions (Statistics Finland, 2026a; 2026b; 2026c). Finnish VET serves learners of different ages and life situations, and its importance is growing in a context marked by demographic change and skills shortages.

VET institutions are not only responsible for developing skills and supporting employment. They also have an important role in regional development, policymaking, networks and public discussion. Through cooperation with policymakers, employers, educational partners and other stakeholders, they bring practical knowledge into discussions about education and skills policy. At the same time, they help ensure that education responds to the needs of learners, working life and society.

This role is particularly important in Finland, where perceptions of vocational education are still influenced by long-standing differences in status between educational pathways. VET has often been associated mainly with young people who are not interested in academic studies. VET providers, together with organisations such as AMKE, the Finnish Association for the Development of Vocational Education and Training, have therefore worked to broaden this understanding and highlight vocational education as an important pathway for individuals, working life and society.

Regional influence and workforce development

At the national level, VET institutions can contribute to policymaking by bringing practical experience into dialogue with decision-makers. This is particularly important when legislation, funding or other major reforms are being prepared. The impact of policy decisions can look very different at national level than it does in the everyday work of an education provider.

Meetings with Members of Parliament, ministers and other government representatives provide opportunities to discuss the realities of vocational education and bring regional perspectives into national discussions. Study visits to Parliament and visits by policymakers to VET institutions are also useful ways to create dialogue. Education providers can explain current developments and challenges, while policymakers can get a better understanding of how national decisions are experienced in practice. Samiedu has participated in this dialogue in several ways. Over the years, Samiedu’s Principal has met ministers in Parliament together with other regional representatives. Samiedu has also welcomed Members of Parliament to Savonlinna to discuss education, labour market issues and regional development in Eastern Finland. These meetings provide an opportunity to bring the perspective of a smaller region into national discussions and to explain how national decisions affect education providers, students and employers locally.

This kind of dialogue helps connect policy design with implementation and brings regional and practical perspectives into national decision-making. It can also help policymakers understand that the effects of the same decision may vary between regions and education providers. VET institutions are therefore not only affected by education policy; they can also contribute to its development. This is particularly important at a time when the funding and operating environment of vocational education is changing rapidly.

Collective influence through networks

VET institutions also influence policy and practice through national and cross-sectoral networks. Working together gives the sector a stronger voice when discussing common issues such as funding, workforce needs, educational pathways and the future of vocational education. AMKE has an important role in this work. It represents Finnish VET providers and supports their development and advocacy. Through stakeholder cooperation, development work and shared policy positions, AMKE helps bring the views and experiences of VET providers into national decision-making and public discussion.

Network cooperation is not only about advocacy. It is also an important way of learning from each other. VET providers face many of the same challenges, even though their regional circumstances may differ. Sharing experiences and good practices makes it possible to spread effective solutions and avoid developing everything separately. Cooperation with organisations outside the VET sector is equally important. Links with higher education, employers and other organisations bring different perspectives to discussions about skills, employment and regional development. The VET sector is stronger when these perspectives are brought together rather than considered separately.

Shaping the public understanding of vocational education

VET institutions also have an important role in public discussion. This matters because public perceptions influence how vocational education is valued and how its contribution to working life and society is understood. VET providers participate in public discussion through expert contributions, media, social media, seminars, events and direct engagement with different stakeholders. They can bring practical examples from students, teaching and cooperation with employers into wider discussions. This makes vocational education more visible and helps show what it looks like today.

Events such as Finland’s annual Vocational Skills Day are one example of this. They provide an opportunity to showcase skills, learning environments and career pathways and to bring vocational education into the public space. Public discussion is also an opportunity to challenge outdated assumptions. Finnish vocational education is not only a route for young people who do not choose general upper secondary education. It serves people at different stages of their lives, supports continuous learning and responds directly to changing needs in working life. Making this visible is an important part of the work of VET institutions.

Vocational education as a strategic societal actor

These four areas show that Finnish VET institutions have a role that goes beyond providing education. They contribute to regional development, bring practical experience into national policymaking, strengthen the sector through networks and help shape the way vocational education is understood in society. At the regional level, they help secure skilled labour and support the vitality of local communities. At the national level, they bring the realities of education and working life into discussions about legislation and funding. Through networks, they share knowledge and strengthen the sector’s ability to respond to change. Through public discussion, they help make the value of vocational education visible.

This role is becoming more important as Finland faces demographic change, skills shortages and increasing pressure on public resources. VET institutions are close to everyday educational practice, but at the same time they are connected to regional, national and international networks. This gives them a useful position between policy and practice. For me, this is one of the strengths of Finnish vocational education. A VET institution can see very concretely what is happening in the lives of students, in local companies and in working life. At the same time, it can bring these observations into wider discussions about the future of education and society. This connection between everyday practice and broader decision-making is something that should be recognised and used more systematically.

Vocational education is therefore much more than a way of providing skills for the labour market. It is an important part of Finland’s social, economic and regional development. Its contribution is strongest when education providers work together with students, employers, municipalities, policymakers and other partners to build solutions that respond to both today’s needs and the challenges ahead.

How can vocational education become more visible, better understood and more attractive to different stakeholder groups? 

This question has been at the centre of the VET2Sustain project. During the project, partners analysed research findings, interviewed stakeholders, tested communication campaigns and organised promotion events across Europe. The results have now been compiled into the VET2Sustain Online Handbook of Best Practices.  

The handbook is based on a simple idea: improving the attractiveness of vocational education requires both good communication and meaningful interaction with society. 

The project identified six success factors that support attractive vocational education systems. These include strong cooperation with working life, positive societal attitudes towards VET, flexible study pathways, high-quality teaching and practice-oriented learning.  

One clear finding was the importance of communication. Institutions that communicate actively through several channels tend to reach their target groups more effectively and create stronger awareness of vocational opportunities. At the same time, communication alone is not enough. Open days, career events, parent evenings and cooperation with employers help make vocational education visible and tangible.  

The handbook offers practical recommendations that can be adapted to different national and regional contexts. Rather than providing a single model, it presents examples and experiences that VET providers can use when planning their own communication activities and events. 

The overall message is clear. The attractiveness of vocational education is strengthened when people have opportunities to see it, experience it and discuss it with those who are part of it. 

That is why communication, cooperation and stakeholder engagement remain important tools for increasing the awareness and attractiveness of VET across Europe

How could conversational AI support learning in vocational education? In the VET2Sustain project, we piloted an interactive learning scenario on the ThingLink platform, where students progressed through the stages of selecting and changing engine oil for a passenger car, as well as customer service tasks, guided by a conversational AI assistant. 

The pilot received encouraging feedback. According to teachers, the solution was easy to use and provided a smooth learning experience. Students found the task useful, as it helped them understand the steps involved in an engine oil change and the importance of occupational safety. One student described the experience by saying: “The task was easy to stay focused on, and its length was appropriate.” The AI was also praised for its ability to answer questions, provide additional information, and stay within the defined content area. 

From Pilot to Practical Teaching 

Based on the pilot, similar solutions could have a role in vocational education in the future, for example as a support tool in workshop-based learning. At the same time, we learned that educational modules should be designed as small and clearly structured units. 

Overall, the development of the scenario progressed well, although designing AI-guided interactions was at times more challenging than expected. The work became easier when the content was carefully focused on one work phase at a time. The more precisely the content was defined, the more consistently the guidance functioned. The pilot also demonstrated that realistic and practice-oriented implementations provide the strongest support for learning. 

VET2Sustain promotes sustainable, inclusive, and digital vocational education in Europe by integrating the green transition, digitalisation, and cooperation between educational institutions and working life into learning.

Savonlinna sai kesäkuun toisella viikolla kansainvälisiä vieraita, kun Samiedu isännöi VET2Sustain-hankkeen partnerikokousta. Kaupunkiin saapui koulutuksen kehittämisen asiantuntijoita eri puolilta Eurooppaa keskustelemaan ammatillisen koulutuksen tulevaisuudesta sekä arvioimaan kuluvan vuoden loppuun jatkuvan hankkeen tähänastisia tuloksia.

– Kolmivuotisessa Erasmus+-hankkeessa vahvistetaan ammatillisen koulutuksen tunnettuutta ja arvostusta sekä jaetaan hyviä käytäntöjä eri maiden välillä. Savonlinnan tapaamisessa tarkasteltiin hankkeen tuloksia ja suunniteltiin viimeisen toimintavuoden toimenpiteitä, kertoo Samiedun kansainvälisyysasiantuntija Anne-Mari Behm.

Kokouksen keskeisenä teemana oli yhteistyö. Eri maiden edustajat jakoivat kokemuksiaan siitä, miten ammatillisen koulutuksen vetovoimaa voidaan vahvistaa ja miten oppilaitokset voivat tehdä entistä tiiviimpää yhteistyötä työelämän, yritysten ja muiden sidosryhmien kanssa.

– Kansainvälisissä hankkeissa arvokkainta on mahdollisuus oppia toisilta. Jokainen osallistuja toi mukanaan erilaisia näkökulmia ammatillisen koulutuksen vetovoiman kehittämiseen ja käytännön kokemuksia, joita voimme hyödyntää jatkossa myös Savonlinnassa, Behm toteaa.

Esillä suomalaista huipputason teknologiaa ja pedagogiikkaa

VET2Sustain-hankkeessa on ammatillisten oppilaitosten lisäksi mukana myös teknologia-alan yrityksiä. Suomalaisista yrityksistä mukana on ThingLink, jonka kehittämät digitaaliset XR-oppimisympäristöt ovat käytössä ympäri maailmaa. ThingLinkin Aleksi Komun ja Henri Pennasen esittelemät näyttävät pilotit herättivät ansaittua huomiota yleisössä.

– Samiedu on tehnyt jo vuosien ajan yhteistyötä ThingLinkin kanssa. Rakennamme virtuaalisia oppimisympäristöjä opiskelijoillemme. Teoria ja käytäntö voidaan yhdistää XR teknologian avulla. Virtuaalitodellisuudessa voidaan toistaa harjoituksia tilanteissa, joita olisi oikeassa elämässä vaikeaa, kallista tai jopa mahdotonta toteuttaa. Esimerkiksi ajoneuvoalalla on toteutettu harjoitus moottoriöljyn vaihdosta, jossa tekoäly toimii apuopettajana, valottaa Samiedun VR-asiantuntija Sami Pirhonen.

Lumoavia tarinoita Savonlinnan luonnosta ja saaristoelämästä

Virallisen ohjelman lisäksi osallistujat tutustuivat Savonlinnaan ja Saimaan Pihlajaveteen. Vieraat pääsivät kokemaan alueen järviluontoa saaristoristeilyllä Elviira-laivalla, jonka aikana keskustelut jatkuivat rennommissa merkeissä. Hiljaisuus ja yksinäiset mökit, tarinat jääteistä, saimaannorpasta ja elämästä saaristossa herättivät vieraissa ihmetystä ja ihastusta.

Myös Savonlinnan kaupunki teki vaikutuksen kansainvälisiin vieraisiin.

– Osallistujille kaupungista välittyi lämmin ja vieraanvarainen kuva. Saimaan luonto ja ympäristön kauneus tekivät vierailusta erityisen mieleenpainuvan, kertoi Stichting ROC Aventusin strategia- ja koulutusasiantuntija Andrea Wolse Alankomaista.
Savonlinnan tapaaminen vahvisti eurooppalaisia yhteistyöverkostoja ja toi esiin alueen osaamista, kansainvälisiä yhteyksiä sekä koulutuksen ja yritysten välistä yhteistyötä.

– Savonlinna ja Samiedu tarjosivat erinomaiset puitteet kansainväliselle tapaamiselle, totesi saksalaista ammatillista BBZ-oppilaitosta edustanut KV-koordinaattori Peter Willenborg.

– Voimme olla ylpeitä, että olemme jo tähän mennessä parantaneet ammatillisen koulutuksen myönteistä näkyvyyttä ja vetovoimaa EU-tasolla. Myös entisestään tiivistynyt kansainvälinen yhteistyö oppilaitosten välillä avaa uusia ovia tulevaan, VET2Sustain-tiimi ennakoi.

Kahdeksan Samiedun TUVA-koulutuksen opiskelijaa osallistui huhtikuussa Erasmus+-ryhmäliikkuvuusprojektiin yhdessä opettaja Arttu Laukkasen ja palveluohjaaja Sanna Nieminiityn kanssa. Tähän blogiin on koostettu TUVA-opiskelijoiden mietteitä keväisestä Belgian matkasta.

Matkamme suuntautui Belgian Eupeniin, jossa ryhmämme sai lämpimän vastaanoton paikallisen Robert Schuman Instituten opiskelijaryhmältä ja heidän kahdelta opettajaltaan, jotka olivat vieraanamme tämän vuoden tammikuussa.

Unohtumaton matkamme alkoi maanantaiaamuna Savonlinnan rautatieasemalta, ja kello oli lähes puolen yön, kun saavuimme hotelliin Eupenissa. Päällimmäisenä ensimmäisestä matkustuspäivästä jäi mieleen se, ettei junaliikenne Saksassa toimi käytännössä lainkaan, mutta paikalliset olivat hyvin ystävällisiä ja auttoivat meitä turisteja oikeisiin juniin. Huolimatta ensimmäisen reissupäivän raskaudesta ja pituudesta olimme hyvissä ajoin jalkeilla seuraavana aamuna valmiina reissun viralliseen ohjelmaan.

Pääsimme tutustumaan moneen – EU-parlamentista belgialaiseen suklaaseen

Belgialaiset isäntämme olivat suunnitelleet meille mahtavaa ohjelmaa kolmen päivän ajaksi. Ohjelmamme sisälsi mm. lyhyen vaelluksen kansallispuisto High Fensissä, aitojen belgialaisten vohveleiden paistamista sekä kaupunkisuunnistusta Saksan puolella Aachenissa. Erityismaininnan saa torstaipäivä, jonka vietimme Brysselissä. Pääsimme tutustumaan Euroopan parlamentin toimintaan paikan päällä, tapaamaan europarlamentaarikko Li Anderssonia sekä tutustumaan paikalliseen suklaakulttuuriin suklaamuseon ja suklaatyöpajan parissa.

Vaikka aikataulu oli tiivis, meille jäi toki aikaa myös shoppailuun ja upean keskieurooppalaisen arkkitehtuurin ihailuun. Myös paikallinen ruokakulttuuri ansaitsee erityismaininnan. Herkuttelimme Belgiassa esimerkiksi marjoilla, banaanilla ja suklaakastikkeella kuorrutetuilla vohveleilla sekä maittavilla hampurilaisilla. Ehtipä yksi opiskelija käymään kissakahvilassakin tutustumassa paikallisiin nelijalkaisiin.

Kivat kohtaamiset kruunasivat matkan

Parasta reissussamme olivat ehdottomasti ihmiset. Oma porukkamme hitsautui hienosti yhteen ja fiilis säilyi korkealla koko matkan ajan, vaikka välillä reissaaminen ja joka paikkaan kävely väsyttikin. Oli myös mahtavaa nähdä belgialaista opiskelijaryhmää ja heidän opettajiaan uudestaan. Eron hetki Brysselin rautatieasemalla oli iloinen mutta haikea, ja yhteydenpitoa sekä jatkovierailuita toivottiin molemmin puolin.

Savonlinnan lentokentälle saapuikin perjantai-iltana kymmenen väsynyttä mutta onnellista euroopanmatkaajaa reppu täynnä uusia elämyksiä ja ainutlaatuisia kokemuksia. Samiedun TUVA-reissuporukka suosittelee Erasmus+-ryhmäliikkuvuusprojekteihin osallistumista jokaiselle ammattialalle ja opiskelijalle. Kokemus oli unohtumaton!

The VET2Sustain project has organised around 50 different events across Finland, Italy, the Netherlands and Germany to promote the attractiveness of vocational education and training (VET). The events targeted students, parents, teachers, study counsellors, companies and policymakers, reaching an estimated 15,000 participants.

At Samiedu Vocational College in Finland, the activities included the Ysiviikko (Vocational Education Introduction Week for 9th graders), information evenings for parents, further studies fairs, technology-themed events, working life forums and discussions with policymakers and regional stakeholders. These events created opportunities for direct dialogue between young people, families, education providers, companies and decision-makers.

The project showed that VET becomes more attractive when people can experience it directly. Hands-on workshops, open days, career fairs, company meetings and interactive discussions helped participants better understand vocational pathways, working life opportunities and further study options. Especially practical “learning by doing” activities and authentic encounters with students and employers were seen as highly effective.

One important learning point was that interactive and participatory events work better than traditional information sessions. Participants appreciated opportunities to ask questions, network and see vocational skills in practice. Hybrid events also improved accessibility, especially for parents, while onsite events created stronger engagement and interaction. Samiedu’s parent evenings showed that families value concrete information about study opportunities, employment prospects and progression pathways after VET.

The events also strengthened cooperation between VET providers and working life. Samiedu’s working life forums and employer cooperation events highlighted the importance of continuous dialogue between education and companies. Employers valued direct contact with students and teachers, while schools gained better understanding of labour market needs and future competence requirements. The project confirmed that strong cooperation with working life increases the credibility and visibility of VET.

The project also identified several lessons learned. Small and targeted events enabled deeper discussions and personalised guidance, while large-scale events were effective in increasing awareness and visibility. Better preparation of participants and stronger involvement of working life representatives were identified as important areas for future development. Meetings with policymakers also highlighted that decision-makers can be difficult to reach, but their involvement is essential for long-term support, visibility and development of vocational education.

Overall, VET2Sustain demonstrated that well-planned, interactive and practice-oriented events can play an important role in improving the image, visibility and attractiveness of vocational education across Europe

As the S.E.E.D project enters its final months—officially ending in late February 2026—it is a good moment to reflect on what has been achieved and how the work will continue at Samiedu. Over the past two years, S.E.E.D has brought together partners from Finland, the Netherlands and Italy to co-create learning materials based on the need analyzis made in international context, strengthen teacher competence raising week organized in Netherlands, and deepen understanding of social entrepreneurship as a driver for social impact.

One of the project’s key outputs—internationally co-designed teaching materials (a Work book and a Text book)  on social entrepreneurship—has now been piloted with teachers across partner countries. The feedback has been promising, and the materials will soon be made available for wider use in project www pages as well as within Samiedu’s entrepreneurship studies.

A Learning, Teaching and Training Week for Teachers Opened New Perspectives

In November 2025, the S.E.E.D partners organised a Learning, Teaching and Training (LTT) Week in Haarlem, the Netherlands. Samiedu was represented by Jukka Pesonen and Arttu Laukkanen, who described the week as “an eye-opening experience.” They highlighted how Dutch municipalities and organisations integrate social needs—such as the service of school meals—into entrepreneurial solutions that combine business logic with social value. This model sparked many new ideas for how social entrepreneurship could be strengthened in Finnish VET education and how Samiedu could further develop its own teaching practices.

The week left participants inspired and motivated: new concepts, new case studies, and new ways of thinking about responsibility and community engagement in entrepreneurship education.

Stakeholder Meeting at Samiedu’s teaching restaurant Paviljonki: Building a Stronger Ecosystem

On 25 November 2025, Samiedu hosted a stakeholder meeting for social enterprises at the Paviljonki teaching restaurant. The event brought together representatives from several Finnish social enterprises, Samiedu teachers, and business advisory organisations.

Ia Poikulainen from Arvoliitto delivered an excellent keynote, outlining how social enterprises can be better supported in their operations—from visibility and communication to legal structures and business development services.

After the presentations, networking continued around Paviljonki’s beautifully set long tables. One shared conclusion emerged clearly: there is a significant need for more awareness-raising about social entrepreneurship in Finland. Unlike in the Netherlands and Italy, the status and visibility of social enterprises in Finland are still developing, and more collaboration is needed between educators, entrepreneurs, and advisory organisations.

Final Steps: Preparing the Project’s Closure in Haarlem

As the project moves into its final phase, Suvi Levonen and Anne-Mari Behm will travel to Haarlem for the SEED project’s closing meeting. There, partners will finalise the framework for reporting, agree on the final tasks, and outline how the project’s impact will be sustained beyond its official end.

Reflecting on her experience, Suvi Levonen notes: “This has been a fascinating and inspiring project. I have gained valuable insights that will help us integrate responsibility and social impact more strongly into Samiedu’s entrepreneurship education.”

 Ammattiopisto Samiedu on ollut viimeisen kahden vuoden ajan mukana selvittämässä alueensa yhteiskunnallisten yritysten verkostoa kansainvälisessä S.E.E.D.-hankkeessa. Yhteiskunnallisten yritysten osaamiskeskuksen tilaston mukaan Suomessa on n. 5 000 yhteiskunnallista yritystä, joista 43 toimii Savonlinnassa. Ne edustavat yhdistyksiä kulttuurin, urheilun, sosiaalipalveluiden, terveyspalveluiden ja koulutuksen aloilta. 

Monet yhdistykset ja järjestöt toteuttavat alueellaan omalle yhteisölle tärkeitä palveluja yrittäjämäisesti. Nykyisin tällaista toimintaa kutsutaan yhteiskunnalliseksi yrittäjyydeksi. Työ- ja elinkeinoministeriö julkaisi vuonna 2021 Yhteiskunnallisten yritysten strategian.  

– Yhdistystoiminta on monille tärkeä harrastus, ja toimintaan on intoa ja talkoohenkeä. Yhdistysten jäsenet kaipaavat kuitenkin tietoa ja taitoa löytää uusia mahdollisuuksia toiminnan rahoittamiseen. S.E.E.D.-hankkeen maksuttomassa päätöstilaisuudessa 25.11.2025 yhdistystoimijoille on tarjolla tietoa yhteiskunnallisen yrittäjyyden merkityksestä ja liiketoiminnan tukimahdollisuuksista, kertoo yrittäjyyden kehittäjäopettaja Suvi Levonen.

VET2Sustain-hankkeessa on tehty eurooppalainen selvitys tekoälyn (AI) ja laajennetun todellisuuden (XR) käytöstä ammatillisessa koulutuksessa. Kyselyyn vastasi 94 asiantuntijaa eri puolilta Eurooppaa, ja tulokset osoittavat, että tekoälyn käyttö opetuksessa on jo melko laajaa – 65 % vastaajista oli hyödyntänyt AI-teknologioita opetuksen suunnittelussa, sisällön tuotannossa tai oppimisen henkilökohtaistamisessa. XR-teknologioita (kuten virtuaalisia simulaatioita ja lisätyn todellisuuden sovelluksia) oli käyttänyt kolmannes vastaajista, useimmiten kokeiluluonteisesti. Tutkimuksen mukaan AI ja XR tukevat yksilöllistä ja turvallista oppimista, lisäävät opiskelijoiden motivaatiota ja parantavat koulutuksen saavutettavuutta. Haasteina nähtiin opettajien osaamisen puute, laitteistojen ja resurssien rajallisuus sekä selkeiden strategioiden ja ohjeistusten puuttuminen. Silti kiinnostus teknologioiden hyödyntämiseen on erittäin vahvaa: 89 % vastaajista haluaa ottaa AI- tai XR-ratkaisuja käyttöön tulevaisuudessa.

Samiedun hanketiimille VET2Sustain on tuonut runsaasti uutta sisältöä työhön, lisännyt osaamista ja laajentanut verkostoja. Työ kansainvälisessä verkostossa on kehittänyt nopeasti hanketoiminnan osaamista, puheenvuorot kokouksissa ja analyysit erilaisista aineistoista ovat nyt normaalia työtä, ei enää erityinen ponnistus. Seuraavaksi Samiedu etenee pilottivaiheeseen, jossa testataan Thinglinkin alustalla XR-oppimisympäristöjä – askel kohti entistä elämyksellisempää ja osallistavampaa ammatillista koulutusta. VET2Sustain-hanke tarkastelee ammatillisen koulutuksen (VET) houkuttelevuutta eri puolilla Eurooppaa. Kesällä 2024 toteutettuun kyselyyn vastasi 160 ammatillisen koulutuksen asiantuntijaa 18 maasta – opettajia, hallinnon edustajia ja päättäjiä. Tulosten mukaan yleissivistävää koulutusta arvostetaan monissa maissa edelleen enemmän kuin ammatillista koulutusta, vaikka VET nähdään käytännönläheisenä ja laadukkaana. Suomessa ammatillisen koulutuksen tila arvioitiin vahvimmaksi, erityisesti opetuksen resurssien ja yritysyhteistyön osalta.

Suurimmat haasteet liittyvät nopeasti muuttuviin työelämän taitovaatimuksiin, resurssien riittävyyteen sekä digitaalisen ja kestävän kehityksen edistämiseen. Oppilaitokset ovat kuitenkin jo vastanneet näihin haasteisiin muun muassa modernisoimalla oppimisympäristöjä, kehittämällä opettajien osaamista ja lisäämällä yhteistyötä työelämän kanssa.

Kysely osoitti myös, että vetovoimaisimmat oppilaitokset hyödyntävät aktiivisesti sosiaalista mediaa ja monikanavaista viestintää. Sosiaalisen median kampanjat, yhteistyö yritysten kanssa ja yhteisötapahtumat nähtiin tehokkaimpina keinoina lisätä kiinnostusta ammatilliseen koulutukseen.

Vastaajat painottivat tarvetta lisätä rahoitusta, parantaa julkista näkyvyyttä ja vahvistaa ammatillisen koulutuksen yhteiskunnallista arvoa. Tärkeitä kehittämiskohteita ovat myös opettajien digiosaaminen, kestävän kehityksen taidot sekä opiskelijoiden motivaation tukeminen.

Ammatillisen koulutuksen osaajille nämä tulokset eivät tuoneet uutta vaan pikemminkin vahvistivat aiempaa käsitystä vetovoimatekijöistä. Selvitys antaa kuitenkin hyvän selkänojan jatkaa sekä Samiedun vetovoimaisuuden tarkastelua ja Vet2sustain hankkeet toimenpiteitä, jotka pohjautuvat tälle selvitykselle. Ammatillisesta koulutuksesta ei ole liikaa tutkittua tietoa, olemme ylpeitä voidessamme tuoda tälle kentälle VET2sustain hankkeella uutta tietoa.

This autumn has been exceptionally international at Samiedu Vocational College. We have hosted more visiting groups than ever before, thanks to the new Erasmus+ Group Mobility action, which enables more flexible and reciprocal exchanges between vocational schools.

During the Erasmus Days, Samiedu welcomed a group of German teacher trainees for a two-week job shadowing period with our teachers across different fields. The group also spent a few days visiting the local Art High School, learning about Finnish education and teaching practices. In addition, we were delighted to continue our long-standing collaboration with our Hungarian student group, who every autumn complete part of their training in our teaching restaurant Paviljonki.

These visits are part of Samiedu’s strong commitment to internationalisation at home, one of the key goals highlighted in the Erasmus+ Programme Guide (2025). According to the guide, internationalisation at home means “purposeful integration of international and intercultural dimensions into the formal and informal curriculum for all students within domestic learning environments” (Beelen & Jones, 2015). In other words, it brings global learning to our classrooms and workplaces — without the need to travel abroad.

For us, these exchanges are truly two-way learning experiences. We get to practice English in real situations, explain our work to others, and reflect on our methods and everyday routines. At the same time, our students gain a taste of internationality through interaction with the visiting teacher trainees and students.

We are proud to share Finnish vocational education with our European partners — and equally proud to learn from them. Together we build understanding, friendship, and professional growth across borders.

S.E.E.D.-hankkeessa on kuluneen syksyn aikana työstetty opettajakoulutusmateriaalia, jonka valmistelussa Samiedun  yrittäjyyden opettaja Suvi Levonen ja SAKKYn  Mika Mujunen on ollut vahvasti mukana. Materiaali pääsee pian testiin, kun se pilotoidaan hankkeen opettajakoulutuksessa Haarlemissa, Hollannissa, Nova Collegessa. Samiedusta koulutukseen osallistuu kaksi opettajaa, ja odotamme kokemuksia ja oppia innolla. Myös omana kokeiluna Samiedun opiskelijat testasivat 13.9. Yhteistä hyvää -innoleirillä liikeidean kehittämiseksi yhteiskunnallisten yritysten työkaluja.  

Savonlinnassa myös tapahtuu: 25.11.2025 järjestämme hankkeen multiplier eventin, johon on kutsuttu alueen yhdistyksiä ja yhteisöjä. Tapahtumassa keskustellaan, verkostoidutaan ja suunnitellaan tulevaa yhteistyötä. Mukana on myös Yhteiskunnallisten Yritysten Osaamiskeskuksen asiantuntija, joka kertoo heidän tarjoamistaan palveluista ja yritystoiminnan tuesta.

SEED’s third social entrepreneurship learning tour took Samiedu Vocational School’s entrepreneurship development teacher Suvi Levonen and internationalisation expert Anne-Mari Behm to Salerno, Italy. April in sunny Italy was lovely in the middle of a snowy spring in Finland. We spent five intensive days in the city of Salerno and the municipality of Baronissi, learning about different kinds of social enterprises in the region.

We visited cooperatives, associations, benefit companies, and foundations. Some focused on social services, others on employment, culture, or environmental education. Many of them were strongly value-driven, and we were impressed by their motivation and commitment.

One key difference from the Finnish model is that Italian social enterprises are often supported and controlled by public administration through funding. Quality control is done through standards and project evaluations. In Finland, social enterprises operate more independently and are often smaller.

We also saw how civilian service plays an important role in Italy. Young people can gain work experience and soft skills while supporting social enterprises. It also brings tax benefits for individuals. This is useful because in Italy, practical training in education is shorter and more theoretical than in Finland.

Another interesting point was how widely volunteers are involved. In many organisations, their role is essential. Suvi Levonen appreciated the strong sense of community – people working together for the good of society.

We also learned about the challenges. Many organisations depend on short-term project funding. This makes long-term planning difficult. Some leaders said they would need more financial and project management skills to make their work more sustainable.

Anne-Mari Behm was especially touched by the strong support for migrants. Large numbers of people from North Africa are arriving in the area, and many social enterprises offer them shelter, guidance, and services. The need is huge, and the work is important.

One thing that surprised us was the weak connection between vocational education and the third sector. In Finland, schools often work closely with companies and organisations. This helps students gain real-world skills and improves the match between education and working life. In Italy, schools seemed more isolated.

Despite some challenges, the passion, quality, and impact of Italian social enterprises were inspiring. We came home with new ideas and deep respect for the people who are making a difference every day

Regenerative tourism is not just a trend; it is a transformative approach that benefits entrepreneurs, the environment, and local communities. Unlike sustainability, which focuses on maintaining the status quo, regenerative tourism aims to restore and enhance ecosystems and cultural heritage, ensuring long-term resilience. This approach was a key focus of the CE4RT research in 2024, with 80 SMEs who participated in an online course on regenerative tourism.

For entrepreneurs, adopting regenerative practices brings increased customer loyalty and opens new business opportunities. Today’s travelers seek authentic experiences that align with their values, such as eco-friendly accommodations and community-based activities. Many companies in the CE4RT project reported greater visibility and recognition for their regenerative efforts.

From an environmental perspective, regenerative tourism supports biodiversity, reduces carbon footprints, and encourages the responsible use of natural resources. Examples include rewilding landscapes, supporting pollinator populations, and organizing eco-focused events. These were some of the challenges highlighted during the research, showing that while regenerative tourism is a promising business model, it also comes with unique difficulties.

Local communities also benefit significantly, as mentioned by SMEs from Ireland, Iceland, Netherlands, Poland and Finland. Regenerative tourism fosters local pride, creates jobs, and helps preserve cultural heritage. By involving local stakeholders and respecting traditional knowledge, businesses can ensure tourism benefits are shared fairly and enrich local culture.

The CE4RT project’s findings confirm that regenerative tourism is a win-win-win—for businesses, the environment, and society. It provides a roadmap for a future where tourism thrives in harmony with the world around it. A challenge accepted!

Leipomo-konditoria-alan opettaja Jaana Muhonen kävi jobshadow-matkalla Eupenissa, Belgiassa tutustumassa paikalliseen oman alansa koulutukseen ja työpaikkoihin. Lisäksi Jaana arvioi Eupenissa harjoittelujaksolla olevien opiskelijoidensa näyttöjä ja toi opiskelijat harjoittelujakson jälkeen takaisin Suomeen.

Jaanan matkan mahdollisti EU-rahoitteinen Erasmus KA1 -hanke, jolla Samiedusta matkusti viime vuonna yli 80 opiskelijaa ja henkilöstön jäsentä. Jaana kertoo vierailustaan Eupenissa matkakertomuksessaan alla.

Tiistain päivälennolla Savonlinnasta Helsinki-Vantaalle ja sieltä kohti Brysseliä. EU:n pääkaupunkia ei ehtinyt muutamaa juna-asemaa enempää ihailla, koska matka jatkui suoraan lentokentän alapuolen juna-asemalta Eupeniin, jonne saavuin illalla kymmenen maissa.

Paikallinen kv-vastaava Elysee oli juna-asemalla vastassa ja yhdessä etsimme kaupungista majoitukseni. Hän huolehti vielä hienosti, että minulla oli kaikki tarvittava ja antoi ohjelman vierailupäiville.

Vierailut opiskelijoiden työpaikoilla

Keskiviikko alkoi Irish-opiskelijani työpaikkaan Ofenfrisch-leipomo-myymälään tutustuen. Oli erittäin mielenkiintoista keskustella paikallisista tuotteista sekä leivontamenetelmistä omistajan kanssa. Samalla saimme tehtyä näytön arvioinnin ja pääsinpä vilkaisemaan leipomonkin puolelle.

Opiskelijan kanssa saimme aikaan hyvän keskustelun myös belgialaisen ja suomalaisen työlainsäädännön eroavaisuuksista sekä yleisistä sosiaalisista etuuksista. Oppia tuli siis paljon muuhunkin kuin vain leipomiseen liittyen. Upeaa oli huomata, kuinka pidetty Irish oli harjoittelupaikassaan, hänelle oli iltapäivällä järjestetty jopa läksiäiset lahjojen kera. Minäkin sain mukaani maisteltavaksi herkullista paikallista leivonnaista, makeaa riisipiirakkaa. Tästä tuntui olevan jokaisella leipomolla oma versionsa, jokaisen mielestä heillä tietenkin parhaan ja perinteisimmän version mukaan leivottu.

Seuraava tutustumiskohde oli opiskelijani Viktoriian työpaikoista toinen, eli Kokartz-kahvila. Tänne sain seurakseni toisen paikallisista kv-vastaavista, Giselan. Syykin selvisi pian: kahvilan henkilökunta ei puhunut englantia. Joten Gisela käänsi saksasta minulle englanniksi kahvilan johtajattaren arvioinnit siitä, kuinka meidän opiskelijallamme oli mennyt. Ja loistavastihan hän oli pärjännyt: palvellut asiakkaita saksaksi, vaikkei aiemmin puhunut sitä kieltä sanaakaan.

Viktoriia itse oli tuona päivänä Kokartzin leipomolla, jonne harjoittelijoita ei yleensä päästetty. Mutta koska hän oli pärjännyt niin hienosti oikealla asenteella kahvilalla, oli kahvilan vastaava puhunut hänet myös leipomolle harjoittelemaan muutamaksi päiväksi. Minä en ikävä kyllä päässyt tutustumaan itse leipomoon. Mutta tuotteisiin kylläkin, kun kävimme kahvilassa perjantaina herkuttelemassa opiskelijoiden kanssa leivoksilla. Tuolloin myös Viktoriian työtoverit kävivät hänet hyvästelemässä ja lahjoja vaihdettiin uusien ystävien kesken.

Tutustuminen lähialueisiin

Torstaiksi minulle oli järjestetty tutustumista lähikyliin. Matkustin bussilla puolen tunnin päähän paikallisen kv-vastaava Giselan kotikylään, josta pääsin hänen kyydissään tutustumaan paikallisiin nähtävyyksiin ja belgialaiseen elämäntapaan. Herkullisen lounaan nautimme luontopolun varrella olevassa ravintolassa ja pääsin maistelemaan perinteistä paikallista ruokaa. Syödessämme minua myös sivistettiin, kuinka ranskanperunat ovatkin oikeasti belgialainen keksintö. Ja että ranskalaiset tekevät ne väärin, oikea tapa on kypsentää ne kaksi kertaa erilämpöisissä rasvoissa, jotta niistä tulee kunnolla rapeita!

Iltapäivällä hyppäsin paikallisen bussin kyytiin ja hurautin tutustumaan lähikaupunki Aacheniin Saksan puolelle. Se oli kaunis kaupunki valloittavine vanhoine rakennuksineen, mutta jalkani johdattivat minut opiskelijoideni suosituksesta kohti Lindt-tehtaanmyymälää, joka näytti kaikkien suklaanrakastajien pyhiinvaelluskohteelta pitkine hyllyineen, jotka olivat täynnä jos jonkinlaisia suklaaherkkuja.

Eupen sijaitsee lähellä monen eri maan rajoja, joten siitä on helppo tehdä matkoja eri paikkoihin. Brysselin ja Saksan Aachenin lisäksi opiskelijat olivat kv-vaihdon aikana ehtineet vierailla myös Luxemburgin ja Alankomaidenkin puolella.

Vierailu Robert Schuman Instituteen

Vierailuni viimeisenä päivänä pääsin opiskelijoideni mukana tutustumaan Robert Schuman Instituten ravintola-alan koulupäivään. Täällä opiskelijani opiskelivat aina torstait ja perjantait leipoen opetuskeittiössä. Herra Schmack opetti saksalaisella jämäkkyydellä ruoanlaiton hienouksia ja kertoili minulle englanniksi koulutuksesta. Herra Petrovcic ohjeisti tarjoilupuolen opiskelijoita ranskalaisella charmikkuudella ja pahoitteli minulle, ettei puhu englantia. Kaikki opiskelijatkin olivat erittäin kohteliaita ja kyselivät muun muassa, että maistuuko kahvi.

Koulupäivä alkoi meillekin tutulla tavalla jakaen päivän työtehtäviä taululle. Sitten opiskelijat siirtyivät keittiöön valmistamaan ruokia ravintolalle. Joka päivä heistä valittiin ”chef”, joka oli vastuussa päivän toiminnoista. Hän myös sai vyölleen roikkumaan arvokkaan näköisesti kokin veitset. Mielenkiintoinen yksityiskohta koulussa oli, että kaikki opiskelijat pyydettiin yhdessä syömään ennen kuin ravintola avattiin. Ensin he söivät keiton leivän kanssa, menivät jatkamaan töitään ja sitten kutsuttiin uudestaan pääruualle.

Ravintolan puolella suomalaista ihastutti valtava puheensorina ja iloinen naureskelu, kun asiakkaat nauttivat lounastaan opetusravintolassa. Desibelit olivat huomattavasti korkeammat kuin meille tutussa Suomessa yleensä lounasravintoloissa. Toinen erilaisuus, jonka panin merkille, oli se, että opiskelijat harjoittelevat myös viinin tekoa koulussa. Ja toki myös se, että lounaan jälkiruokana nautittiin monia erilaisia juustoja.

Belgian reissu oli mahtava kokemus ja suosittelen kaikkia lähtemään tutustumaan muiden maiden koulutukseen, jos suinkin mahdollista. Reissussa oli jännittäviäkin hetkiä, mutta kotimatka kolmistaan oli matkan helpoin osuus, olihan minulla mukanani upeat, reippaat opiskelijat, jotka toivat open turvallisesti kotiin!

Working together with entrepreneurs is a great way to bring new ideas and solutions into vocational education and training (VET). The CE4RT project shows how these partnerships can benefit both educators and entrepreneurs, as well as the wider community.

For entrepreneurs, collaboration with VET teachers and students offers fresh ideas and access to future talent. It creates opportunities to solve real-world problems and develop practical, innovative solutions.

For teachers, working with businesses gives valuable insights into current industry challenges. Hearing directly from entrepreneurs about their struggles and solutions helps teachers bridge the gap between theory and practice. Projects like CE4RT are especially important for teachers who have worked in education for a long time. They offer a chance to learn something new, step into the role of a learner, and gain fresh inspiration.

Working with entrepreneurs is very different from teaching students, said Tourism Teacher Mika Nenonen and specialist of internationalisation Anne-Mari Behm. It requires a focus on real challenges and finding practical solutions. This kind of collaboration energizes teachers and helps them grow professionally while supporting sustainable practices and community development.

The CE4RT project proves how partnerships between VET institutions and businesses can drive positive change and create a more sustainable future.

In November, the CE4RT project participants embarked on a benchmark trip to Ireland, which proved to be a milestone in understanding regenerative tourism practices. Hosted by Munster Technical University and local tourism leaders and supported by EU co-funded CE4RT project trip offered Finnish SMEs invaluable opportunities to learn, exchange ideas, and witness exemplary initiatives in action.

Highlights of the visit included exploring businesses that have seamlessly integrated nature conservation and cultural heritage into their operations. The Ireland benchmark trip offered an incredible opportunity to visit numerous businesses that share the same regenerative tourism ideology. It was a chance to witness firsthand how common challenges in sustainability are tackled and to engage in meaningful discussions with passionate entrepreneurs. From inspiring panel discussions where business owners shared their hurdles and solutions to thought-provoking keynote speakers, the experience was filled with valuable insights.

One of the highlights was a presentation by Samiedu’s Anne-Mari Behm. As a project partner, she shared her experiences of overcoming language barriers, fostering cultural understanding, and building bridges of mutual learning. She spoke about the “steps of growing understanding” – the process of deepening collaboration and finding inspiration through working with entrepreneurs. Her enthusiasm and passion for working alongside business owners were truly contagious.

This trip not only provided practical knowledge and inspiration but also reinforced the importance of collaboration, adaptability, and shared values in creating a more sustainable future for tourism.

Participants praised the trip for its hands-on approach and practical insights. One entrepreneur noted, ”This experience has transformed how I view my business’s role in the ecosystem. I now see collaboration and sustainability as essential growth drivers.”

The Ireland benchmark trip not only inspired the participants but also reinforced the importance of learning from diverse practices and perspectives. These lessons will undoubtedly influence their ongoing journey toward regenerative tourism.
