Practical nursing program in English is a perfect match for Judith

Judith Onwusuruaka, who began her studies in Samiedu’s first English-language practical nursing program in November 2024, is clearly excited as she shares how she found her dream study place.

– The healthcare field has always fascinated me, and I would occasionally browse the internet to find a suitable program. When I saw the announcement about the English-language practical nursing program at Samiedu, I immediately decided to apply, says Judith, who arrived in Finland in March 2024.

Judith found the application process easy, as she had already completed the required Duolingo English test and basic Finnish language skills.

– In addition to the certificates, I had to include a video in my application where I talked about myself and my motivation to become a practical nurse, she recalls.

Having studied English language and literature in her home country of Nigeria, Judith praises the way the international student group has been welcomed at Samiedu.

– I have never felt like an outsider. Everyone treats us very equally.

Orientation period established the basis for studies

The program began with a two-month orientation period, during which students were informed about how Finnish society works and given detailed guidance on practical matters related to their studies.
The actual professional studies started in January.

– We have practiced how to take care of clients not only physically but also emotionally. We have also been guided on how to take care of our own well-being so that we can be good caregivers, Judith explains.

Judith is particularly looking forward to the internship starting in August, as she wants to learn through practical work.

– I have no previous experience in elderly care, but I know what kind of help a person might need as they age. When my grandmother could no longer do everything she wanted, I wanted to cheer her up and make her life easier.

– I want to do the same in my work and bring happiness to the elderly, she says.

At the start of the studies, the instruction language is English. However, Finnish is continuously studied, and all competence demonstrations are conducted in Finnish. When asked about the challenges and positive surprises related to her studies, Judith responds:

– The studies are conducted in both English and Finnish, and Finnish is quite difficult. I am constantly working to improve my Finnish language skills. It was new to me that there are breaks during the school day. Breaks are good because they help you cope better.

Students are supported in every possible way

Inspired by Finland’s reputation as the happiest country in the world, Judith hopes to graduate in 2027.
The determined woman hopes to stay and work in Savonlinna, a place she loves for its peaceful energy and people.

– I also want to bring my three children here. My long-term dream is to establish my own care home where I can offer the elderly a happy end of life.

Clearly having found her calling, Judith hopes that other immigrants interested in elderly care will be encouraged to apply for the English-language practical nursing program at Samiedu.

– Students are supported here in every possible way. It has also been great to meet students from different parts of the world. We have a good team spirit and encourage each other!
